Causa Sui’s In Flux is a new, sprawling journey that celebrates two decades of sonic exploration from Denmark’s premier psych voyagers. Following last year’s tight and muscular From The Source, this new LP swings the pendulum in the opposite direction. It’s looser, more impulsive, and full of surprises.
Across 45 minutes, the Odense quartet leans deep into their improvisational instincts. The opening track, “The Circus Is Back,” sets the tone: a nearly two-minute swell of fuzzy guitars, rippling drums, and luminous keys. From there, the band plunges into swirling landscapes.
“Milkweed’s Pod” rides a groove somewhere between Dead-style freakout and Eternal Tapestry’s Pacific Northwest haze, while “Boogie Lord’s Revenge” blends sun-scorched fuzz with languid psych-blues swagger.
But In Flux also ventures far from guitar-driven terrain. “Spree,” the synth-heavy closer, ditches strings altogether for a bubbling electronic drift that echoes El Paraiso’s more ambient-leaning releases. Then there’s “Astral Shores,” a 16-minute odyssey that drifts from ritualistic folk into motorik propulsion and back, capturing Causa Sui at their most freeform and inspired.
Fans of their tropicalia-infused Szabodelico or the heavy kraut-fusion of Free Ride will find familiar touchpoints, but In Flux feels like a culmination, melding jazz fusion, kosmische ambiance, and psych rock into one luminous whole.
Even tracks like “Silver in the Gathering Light” and “Modelo” carry cinematic weight, the latter channeling “Riders on the Storm” vibes through a cosmic lens.
Causa Sui’s knack for reinvention remains their greatest strength. Twenty years in, In Flux proves they’re still voyaging outward, unafraid to unmoor and evolve. This – like all Causa Sui records – is essential listening for those chasing transcendence through sound.
