The fifth studio album by the experimental ensemble krautfuzz marks a rousing milestone in their psych-rock journey. Titled simply 5, the record captures the raw energy and masterful synergy of a band at the peak of their powers.
Featuring the talents of Japanese drummer Imari Kokubo, German guitarist Dirk Dresselhaus, and Canadian bassist Derek Shirley, the album also boasts a contribution from guest artist Chandra Shukla (aka Xambuca).
Shukla enriches the sounds with processed electric sitar overdubs, adding an ethereal edge. Shukla is also the driving force behind EROTOTOX DECODINGS, the label releasing the album’s vinyl LP edition.
The members of krautfuzz bring a rich and eclectic musical heritage, with past affiliations ranging from avant-garde pioneers like Faust and Vladislav Delay Quartet to experimental projects like die ANGEL, Schneider TM, Piratezombiedog, Monno, The Still, and Hi-Speed Dubbing.
United by a shared ethos of distilling stylistic ideas into their purest, most adventurous form, Krautfuzz crafts music unshackled from convention. Their work thrives on the edge, eschewing predictable formats in favor of improvisation, mutual responsiveness, and an almost telepathic connection between members.
Acoustic cues and unspoken understanding guide the band through uncharted territories, creating a musical experience that is alive, unpredictable, and deeply collaborative.
The sound of krautfuzz spans a vast spectrum, from fuzz-drenched neo-psych rock to abstract minimalism and pure, visceral noise. Their music is infused with an angular, futuristic perspective, where every note carries a thrill of exploration.
In both the studio and on stage, the band embraces the unconventional, often surprising audiences with guest performers who join their live shows’ second set, adding another layer of spontaneity to the experience.
The album’s cover artwork comes from visual artist iLan Katin, a frequent collaborator whose live video projections have become a staple of the band’s performances.
Together, the music and visuals create a multi-sensory journey that captivates and challenges in equal measure. Fans of heavy instrumental psych rock like Zonk and Causa Sui should love this one. Enjoy!
