Causa Sui, after a four-year hiatus, has finally released its highly anticipated single “Sorcerer’s Disciple” from the forthcoming album From The Source. The album pre-order is now available, with shipping scheduled for June 28th.

The band comprises Jakob Skøtt, Jonas Munk, Rasmus Rasmussen, and Jess Kahr and has released music since 2005. Causa Sui’s trilogy Summer Sessions saw the group move from the heavy psych of earlier days to more abstract, instrumental sounds reminiscent of electric Miles Davis and Can.
Most (I think all) of its records have been released via the excellent El Paraiso label, and Causa Sui’s sound has been described as a giant wave rolling up on the past several years of rock music. On the new record, From The Source, the band has created its most ambitious music yet.
The group’s ties to jazz, experimental, and ambient music make them somewhat of an anomaly in the European psych-rock scene. We’re told that never before has the group’s wide-ranging influences been more meticulously weaved together than on From The Source, with sounds ranging from groovy Zamrock, electric jazz, floating post-rock, Sabbathian riffage, and hypnotic kosmische.
From The Source was recorded during months of sessions in Causa Sui’s studio. They refined each part through intense explorations but kept room for improvisation. They favored “magic takes” over clinical perfection. The temperament of the music ranges from white-iron hot to sub-zero chilled, with every ebb and flow between. Dynamic range has always been essential to Causa Sui, but the band explores it to a new degree in the new record.
The album’s pinnacle is “Visions of a New Horizon,” a 24-minute suite in seven parts. It’s an appropriate closing monument on an album that marks the 20th anniversary of Causa Sui this year. This sounds like it’s going to be an epic psych-rock album!
