Why is Australia such a breeding ground for new psychedelic rock? I’m not sure. If someone knows the answer, please let me know. What I do know is that the psychedelic rock revolution is well underway in Australia.

Some point to Tame Impala’s arrival on the scene as creating a snowball effect that heralded the new psychedelic wave Down Under. That could be the case, but it hardly matters anymore. There are so many great psych bands in Australia that it’s hard to keep tabs on all of them.

I compiled a playlist of some of the more underrated Australian psych bands. Everyone knows about Tame Impala, KGLW, The Murlocs, Babe Rainbow, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. But there’s much more to the national psych scene in Australia than those bands.

While compiling the list, I was surprised by how many of these bands I’ve covered over the past few years. They include Druid Fluids, Golden Sunbird, Winter McQuinn, Misty Lanes, Sons of Zoku, and many more.

Other artists featured on my Underrated Australian Psychedelia playlist include Magic Machine, Ocean Alley, Midlife, Velvet Trip, and Glass Beams. The bands range in sound from neo-psychedelia to heavy psych and everything in between, but they’re all part of the general Australian psychedelic wave.

Check out the playlist below, and let me know what you think. And if you’re an under-the-radar Australian psych band and want a spot on the list, hit me up!
