Magic Machine is another excellent psych-rock band based in Australia that released a new record, Castle In The Sky, on April 19th. The Sydney-based group plays what they call “garage dream boogie,” taking classic rock influences like The Doors and throwing a gnarly neo-psych spin on them.
Castle In The Sky is the band’s third LP, following two releases in 2022, Escapism and Strange World. The cover artwork for all three records is par excellence, and the colorful art fits their sound well. KGLW is a strong point of reference for those unfamiliar with Magic Machine. The swirling guitars, up-tempo madness, and freak-out lyrics are all reminiscent of KGLW.
Magic Machine also brings a grittier style than some other underrated Australian psych-rockers, mixing psychedelia and harder rock very satisfyingly. You won’t find much information about the band online except for an interview here and there. They appear newer to the Australian psych scene and don’t provide much in the way of an artist’s bio.
That makes writing about them a bit harder, but needless to say, Magic Machine is a group worth checking out. The very fact that they’ve emerged from Australia’s fertile psych scene gives them authenticity, to me anyway.
I love the relentless drive of songs like “UFO,” with the hazy, weirdo vocals and organ combined with the big guitar flourishes. “Sweet Creature” is another certified fresh jam, sounding like The Murlocs on speed. The title track adds a bit of funk and falsetto to the mix, a song that sounds most like KGLW.
Dig into Castle In The Sky by Magic Machine, and if you like it, check out their previous two records. It’s another record that proves that some of the best psych music today is flying way under the radar. Enjoy!
