Single Premiere: ‘Doom Doubt’ by Liquid Pennies

Florida-based psych-rockers Liquid Pennies are back with a new single, “Doom Doubt,” a high-octane trip into the sonic stratosphere. The new song will be released today, and The Third Eye is proud to premiere it.

Listen to “Doom Doubt” below:

“Doom Doubt” combines LIquid Pennies’ array of influences, including psych rock, post-punk, alternative, and even a nod to Bossa Nova on the subdued bridge. The new single is another exercise in the broad influences the Tampa Bay, Florida, band draws from, with their ability to play with everyone from Mike Watt to Frankie and the Witch Fingers.

Following the heavy stoner/doom sludge of the single “Name Dropper,” “Doom Doubt” ups the ante and shows the full extent of Liquid Pennie’s rhythmic propensity, kicking off with drummers Casey Jones and Pierson Whicker trading off solos and powering on to the end.

Thematically, the song explores the resistance and wariness of the tech-centered, doom-scrolling, attention-shortening, instantly-gratifying options that seem to be a constant these days. It raises the question of what an alternative to this insidious lifestyle might be.

“Doom Doubt” is also the second single to feature Liquid Pennies’ killer dual drummer lineup, a new chapter for a band that has done its share of sonic exploration on albums like 2021’s Any Wonder and 2023’s Distant Dawn with violinist/vocalist Zoë Turtle that explored everything from intricate King Crimson-tinged progressive rock to folk, two-minute punk, and more.

“Doom Doubt” is a concentrated version of many of these influences that keeps the momentum going with a spot to breathe before a dual-drumming, slamming crescendo as the finale. The dual-drumming may be the signature aspect of the song, as it provides a powerful punch complemented by Chas Binns’ vocal melodies and work on guitar.

A release show, performance on 88.5 WMNF Tampa’s Live Music Showcase, and a tour will support the new release, and the song will appear on their much-anticipated new full-length album coming out in August.

Check out “Doom Doubt” and Liquid Pennies’ previous single, “Name Dropper,” and stay posted to their social media pages for news about their upcoming album. Heavy psych and stoner rock fans should love this band if they don’t know about them already, as they combine various influences and keep experimenting with new sounds. Enjoy!
