Check Out the New Single From Neo-Psychedelic Rockers Liquid Pennies, ‘Name Dropper’

What’s better than one guy pounding the drums? How about two? The Saint Petersburg, Florida-based neo-psychedelic rockers Liquid Pennies recently dropped a new single called “Name Dropper,” the first song featuring their new decibel-decimating double-drummer lineup.

The band says it’s “one of our heaviest releases, featuring each drummer hard-panned, fuzzy riffage, sub-synth, and vocals that range from melodic musing to guttural screams.” Hell yeah!

Liquid Pennies draws from their shared love of stoner/psych rock favorites like Dead Meadow, OSEES, King Buffalo, Orb, All Them Witches, and Black Mountain to make their heavy neo-psych rock. “Name Dropper” is their second venture with Ryan Boesch of Candor Recordings, who has worked with Melvins, The Flaming Lips, St. Vincent, Foo Fighters, Whores, Eels, and countless other notable artists. That’s a great company to be in. “It was an honor to have our music go through the filter of someone who truly understands the sound we’re going for,” Liquid Pennies tells me.

At four minutes, twenty-eight seconds, “Name Dropper” is a potent dose of heavy psych that must be listened to at the highest volume humanly possible (just don’t hurt your ears too much). The riffs are dynamic and solid, bringing a great stoner rock edge, and, yeah, the double-drumming is top-notch.

Liquid Pennies has released three full-length albums since forming in 2018, including their latest from 2022, Any Wonder. They also dropped an EP from earlier this year called Any Ending. The band is mostly on the heavier end of the psychedelic rock spectrum, but we don’t mind that at all.

Since getting together, the band has had many guest musicians and rhythm section changes, but their core lineup consists of Chas Binns (guitar/vocals/synth) and Dylan Carney (bass/synth). Their 2019 debut album, Floods, was self-produced utilizing a blend of analog tape and digital mediums.

But before you peg them as just another heavy psych/stoner act, take note they’ve made some very cool, unique art outside the typical stoner rock stuff. They added a fourth member to the group in 2020, Zoe Turtle, on violin and vocals, who helped create a single that year called “Secrets Dash.” 2021 saw the band’s release of the LP Distant Dawn, which features a beautiful, complex composition called “Left,” featuring violin, which clocks in at more than twelve minutes.

Keep your eyes peeled for any future releases from Liquid Pennies. They’ve been a prolific group since forming in 2018, so I’m guessing a new full-length album may be in the works soon. Enjoy!
