Congulus is a psych rock trio named after an Anatolian folk story formed in 2016 in Istanbul. And – hot damn! – are they good. The band blends Anatolian themes with psychedelic elements, weaving intricate tales in their instrumental songs with multi-part compositions, expansive drones, and fluid riffs.
The group is back with a new single called “İskeletin Düğün Halayı,” which is a precursor to an upcoming album expected to drop this year. Released on January 12th, the new single blends nasty stoner rock riffs with the atmospheric qualities of heavy psychedelia and Anatolian’s 9/8 rhythms. While some of Congulus’ other work is more drone-like, “İskeletin Düğün Halayı” hits like a ton of bricks.
Congulus is named after a folkloric ghoul story meant to scare children in Anatolian winters, and the band has turned this story into a musical adventure. Congulus creates a dynamic atmosphere during their live shows with experimental themes, live loops, and hypnotic visuals.
Their debut album, Bozkir, was released in 2019, and in 2021, the band released the EP Tılsım in digital and vinyl formats through Nasoni Records. Check out the new single from these Istanbul-based psych rockers, and keep your eyes peeled for their new record this year. Congulus’ music invites listeners to a razzle-dazzle experience deep into space’s dark and cold depths, so put on your headphones, tune in, and let the sounds take you away. Enjoy!
