Check Out the New Single ‘Hypersurreal’ by Heavy Psych Rockers REZN and Vinnum Sabbathi

The atmospheric Chicago psych-doomers REZN are back – and they’ve brought friends. The band teamed up with Mexico City cosmic rockers Vinnum Sabbathi for a new record of heavy exploration called Silent Future, due on August 11, 2023. One single off the record is available so far – “Hypersurreal” – and I suggest you give it a listen (or many listens).

REZN and Vinnum Sabbathi contributed equally to Silent Future to create an album of lush, hypnotic, and riff-drenched psychedelia. REZN is one of the better heavy psych and doom bands out there, making music that is megalithic, atmospheric, and hauntingly beautiful. I’m not as familiar with Vinnum Sabbathi, but I plan to dive into their catalog after hearing of this new music.

The bands describe Silent Future as “alternatingly ethereal as celestial light and dense as a black hole collapse.” It’s the work of two talented groups pushing themselves beyond what they thought was possible, and if the rest of the record is as good as “Hypersurreal,” then we’re in for a real treat.

“Hypersurreal” begins with a filthy, cosmic riff before settling into the atmospherics that REZN is known for. The vocals are light and beckoning, telling us, “You’re not alone.” I’m unsure if they’re discussing extraterrestrial life or trying to cure our loneliness, but it sounds good.

The songwriting in “Hypersurreal” is tight, and the addition of Vinnum Sabbathi adds an even more cosmic horror twist to things. It reminds me a bit of another psychedelic doom band I love, King Bastard, and it could also be compared to the work of Acid King and King Buffalo.

You may feel like you’re voyaging through the outer reaches of space with “Hypersurreal,” but there’s the foreboding sense that danger lurks around the corner. Is it a hostile force? Are we in code red? The song ends before we get answers, so maybe Silent Future will clue us in when the album drops in August. It’s cinematic sci-fi music, so this single can be considered the trailer for the summer blockbuster album that will be streaming soon.

Head to Bandcamp to pre-order Silent Future and, in the meantime, catch up with REZN by listening to their March 2023 full-length release, Solace. Also, check out Vinnum Sabbathi’s discography, including their most recent LP, 2020’s Of Dimensions and Theories. These heavy doses of psychedelic-doom-space rock will have you pondering the nature of the cosmos, rereading Carl Sagan, and looking closer at the night sky.
