New Single: ‘The Dawn of Man’ by King Bastard

The New York-based psychedelic doomers King Bastard are back with a meaner and more brutally heavy track than ever. The group recently released the single “The Dawn of Man” from their forthcoming second LP, From Whence They Came, due on June 21st.

King Bastard’s debut album from 2022, It Came From The Void, is one of my favorite heavier records from the past few years. It Came From The Void is a face-melting dose of heavy psychedelic doom that reminded me of the phantasmagoric delights of White Zombie’s classic Astro Creep.

Based in Stony Brook, New York, King Bastard’s music is an excursion into the dark recesses of gritty sci-fi horror. The band bridges the gap between doom metal’s psychedelic and sludgy aspects, terraforming a frightening new sonic landscape. Their music is as if H.P. Lovecraft had a chance to drop acid to expand upon his classic and weird cosmic horror tales.

Since their first release, King Bastard has evolved their sound to emphasize further the contrast between the psychotropic and psychopathic realms of the doom metal scene, shifting from merciless, caveman riffs to disorienting FX-ridden harmonies.

The new single, “The Dawn of Man,” gives us a taste of what King Bastard’s new album has in store for us in June. The track is heavier than ever, featuring guttural vocals that I don’t recall as much from their debut, lethal riffs, and walls of sound that take no prisoners. This isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you like the new single, I highly recommend checking out King Bastard’s debut album, It Came From The Void. You can also check out the interview I did with the band not too long ago before they set out on a U.S. tour. Fans of underground heavy psych/doom acts like Aiwass, AAWKS, and Dead Shrine should love what King Bastard creates. Enjoy!
