A new stoner rock band emerging from Sydney, Australia, is ready to release their debut LP and has shared some wicked singles already. Iron Blanket has garnered a following Down Under for a much-heralded live show, which is now translated into their forthcoming album, Astral Wanderer, which will drop on April 5th via U.K.-based Copper Feast Records and legendary Athens’ label Sound Effect Records.
Iron Blanket blends Seventies-inspired psychedelic grooviness with unmistakable driving stoner rock riffs and Mars Volta-eqsue vocals. The inaugural co-release of the new album between Copper Feat and Sound Effect Records will bring two limited edition vinyls, one in classic black and the other in blood red.
Iron Blanket has released three singles from the upcoming album so far, including “Kookaburra Nightmare,” “Evil Mind,” and “Mystic Goddess.”
“Kookaburra Nightmare” is the longest of the bunch at nearly nine minutes, combining killer riffs and a heavy psychedelic atmosphere to die for. “Evil Mind” is more of a straight stoner rocker, a high-energy song that pummels the listener. “Mystic Goddess” also rocks hard, showing off Johann Ingemar’s vocals and the muscular twin guitar attack of the group.
Iron Blanket formed in 2020 out of the weed haze of the first COVID lockdowns. It was initially a five-piece group that bonded over a love of Seventies rock. They draw influence from the heavy licks of Black Sabbath and Pentagram across to the psychedelic explorations of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd. But as their jams got heavier and the fuzz pedals got weird, thick, and dirty, Nineties-inspired riffs started to appear.
The group claims to have a reputation as one of Sydney’s best stoner/heavy psych bands, so I’ll take their word for it. Fans of groups like Robot God, Acid King, and other heavy psych masters should dig them.
