After the darker, more labyrinthine concept of their previous release, Charlatan, Grinded Grin returns with Celestial Veil. The new album invites listeners into a more accessible but no less artful sound world.
Infused with a stronger rock backbone, clearer song forms, and a surprising emotional warmth, the record marks an evolution for the band, beginning with what may be their most intimate moment yet: an opening ballad that draws you in with unguarded tenderness.
Throughout this seven-track journey, the constant presence of vocalist Fe Malefiz provides a vital throughline. Her voice is hypnotic, raw, and vulnerable, offering a human touch that anchors even the album’s most exploratory moments.
Adding another layer of distinction is a guest turn by legendary drummer Blake Fleming (original member of The Mars Volta), whose polyrhythmic energy and dynamic pulse drive the album forward. Fleming’s contributions push the band’s interplay into thrilling, unpredictable spaces without sacrificing cohesion.
The core lineup—Malefiz (vocals), Aleksandar Vrhovec (guitar, synth, production), Andy Warner (bass), and guest guitarist Petar Šimčić (appearing on four tracks)—shows both chemistry and finesse.
Vrhovec, the band’s principal creative architect, continues to strike a balance between sonic experimentation and strong compositional instincts. His production and mixing bring out a clarity and depth that elevate Celestial Veil beyond typical progressive rock fare.
Mastered by Nathan Reiner, Celestial Veil succeeds in being both exploratory and eminently listenable, a rare blend. It’s an album for those who crave concept and emotion in equal measure, where avant-garde edges meet melodies you’ll want to revisit.
Celestial Veil cements Grinded Grin’s place as one of the most intriguing forces on the global progressive and art rock scene.
