There’s a thrill every record collector knows: uncovering an unassuming gem that transforms into a beloved treasure. Lophae’s debut album, Perfect Strangers, captures this magic, blending familiarity and discovery through its dynamic, world-class improvisation.

Despite its title, Perfect Strangers isn’t a meeting of strangers. Brought together by guitarist and composer Greg Sanders, the quartet radiates an intuitive connection, sculpting sounds with precision and joy.

Sanders—known for his work with Juanita Euka and Teotima—crafts music that balances melodic elegance with rhythmic complexity, providing the foundation for the group’s adventurous interplay.

Sanders called on three musical powerhouses to bring his vision to life: drummer Ben Brown, a rhythmic polymath with roots in Ethio-jazz and Afrobeat; bassist Tom Herbert, a UK jazz mainstay with a resonant tone and boundless curiosity; and saxophonist Sam Rapley, whose lyrical style and effortless command recall tenor legends.

Recorded live to analog tape at London’s Fish Factory, the album thrives on the immediacy of in-room synergy. From the washy, atmospheric guitar loops to intricate grooves, the sonic landscape is both lush and intimate.

Standout tracks include “Fallout,” which juxtaposes laid-back melodies with propulsive rhythms, blending modern jazz harmony, blues, Brazilian Frevo, and West African guitar influences.

“Perfect Strangers” is a groove-driven exploration of ambiguity, shifting between improvisation and composition with chromatic flair. “Greatfields” is a playful, timeless tune that dares you to sit still. “Family Tree” is enriched by a cameo from Cuban trumpeter Yelfris Valdés, nodding to the classic Blue Note jazz catalog.

Sanders’s goal was to write melodies that endure, songs as direct as they are intricate. His compositions blend groove, sensitivity, and harmonic richness, and his collaborators interpret them with masterful grace.

From its danceable grooves to its moments of reflective depth, Perfect Strangers is a record that rewards repeated listening. Lophae’s debut feels indeed like discovering a rare, beautiful treasure.
