Australian guitarist Levi J. Burr has had a busy year so far. Burr released an excellent EP in May, Ledford Guild, and he’s back with a new song, “Sitting in The Direct Sun,” which dropped on June 11th. He says the new single is like a road trip in Australia between Sydney and Alice Springs, and the instrumental guitar music takes a weirder turn with a journey into Burr’s mysterious sci-fi universe.

Burr is a versatile and dedicated musician who unites elements of country, ambient, and fingerstyle guitar music to create tranquil and dynamic instrumental soundscapes, as evidenced by his 2023 LP, Another Domino Map (which we wrote about here). Burr says his songs evoke everything from dusty farmsteads to wide-open vistas that pop with thousands of dancing stars.

“Sitting in The Direct Sun” is more experimental than I recall most of Burr’s previous work. He describes it as a “morphing, molten gem,” a song that will leave you “curious and eager to hit the open road come sundown.”

Listen to “Sitting in The Direct Sun” below:

Spacey synth accompanies Burr’s usual fingerstyle guitar picking on “Sitting in The Direct Sun.” The song has a full-bodied sound with rich textures and strong melodies, and the repetition of the guitar chords is a real strength, adding to a sense of trance. It’s on the back half of the track that Burr really drifts off into deep space as the guitar cuts out, and he lurches into full ambient mode.

Don’t miss Burr’s new single, and if you dig it, check out his previous works, including last year’s Another Domino Map. Burr is another excellent experimental musician in the mold of Golden Brown, The Far Sound, and others we’ve covered that continue to release great music.
