Bandcamp of The Day: Another Domino Map by Levi J. Burr

Levi J. Burr is an Australian musician who released an excellent debut album of fingerstyle guitar music in October 2023 called Another Domino Map. Burr’s music unites country and ambient to create tranquil and dynamic soundscapes. Another Domino Map also features guest appearances from a great cast of musicians, including the excellent ambient country musician Chuck Johnson.

“Evoking everything from dusty farmsteads to wide-open skies that pop with thousands of dancing stars, Burr’s songs take you deep within the many facets and diverse foundations of his vast sonic world,” he says on Bandcamp.

Fans of American Primitive guitar should love Burr’s Another Domino Map, including some artists The Third Eye has covered recently, like Joseph Allred and Kevin Coleman. Burr’s passion for music can be traced through his family’s rich musical heritage, which goes back to his great-grandmother, a renowned entertainer on cruise ships in the 1920s. His great-grandfather was also an accomplished banjo and fiddle player.

His family’s musical legacy inspired Burr to carry on the traditions while forging his own path. True to the earthiness of his music, Burr has a deep connection to grassroots living and finds joy in growing food at home. His reverence for nature and simple pleasures translates into his art, infusing it with an organic and authentic quality.

Another Domino Map consists of eleven tracks and about forty minutes of music, with most songs being relatively short. In a world that often feels disconnected from nature, Burr’s music emerges as a breath of fresh air and a sanctuary where we can find solace in the rhythms of the natural world. Much like the music of Golden Brown, Burr’s Another Domino Map feels like a profound ode to the untamed beauty that surrounds us.

If you listen closely enough, time seems to slow down on tracks like “South Western Line,” the rustle of leaves and the whispers of the wind become part of the symphony of sounds the guitar virtuoso creates. Each note is carefully plucked and thoughtfully arranged on other songs, like “Twisted Glass,” as if the guitar is a vessel for the essence of the wilderness that Burr feels so close to.

Throughout Another Domino Map, there’s a sense of exploration, of venturing into uncharted territory, as Burr acts as a guide and navigates us. There’s adventure but also a deep sense of peace. Burr has found a harmonious balance between the chaos of existence and the serenity of nature.

As we settle into spring, take a nature walk with Burr’s Another Domino Map. It invites us to slow down, listen intently, and reconnect with the world that sustains us. If you like the album, check out Burr’s latest single, “Eucalypt Glade,” which was released in late February. Enjoy!
