New Music: Western Death by Nebula Drag

San Diego heavy psych rockers Nebula Drag are returning with their third full-length album and vinyl LP release, Western Death, via the excellent Desert Records. The power trio will drop the record on December 8th, their first release in four years.

Western Death is a seven-song thundering full-length showcasing the band’s muscular signature sound: massive drums, blazing guitar, and fuzzy bass. We’re told Nebula Drag pushes their psychedelic heaviness into new musical territory with this new LP, so you won’t want to miss this one.

Nebula Drag consists of Corey Quintana on guitar/vocals, Stephen Varns on drums, and Garrett Gallagher on bass. The trio is known for “psycho-delic, fuzz-laden, space rock,” and they invite us to lose ourselves in the new album’s explosion of sound and vision. “Whether it’s the first track – “Crosses” – or the weight of the seventh track – “Western Death” – Nebula Drag’s unity and hard work have made this album very special,” they tell us.

Over the years, Nebula Drag has shared the stage with stoner rock/heavy psych luminaries like YOB, Church of Misery, The Skull, Mars Red Sky, Sasquatch, SubRosa, Monolord and many others. The band says all these acts have inspired them in a way they hope moves them into new musical territory.

We’re told the best part of the vinyl record is you can choose either the “Western” side or the “Death” side for your listening pleasure. Pick your poison. Or better yet, start with “Western” and then let the heavy psych madness descend into “Death” and utter insanity when you flip the record over.

Western Death was recorded in San Diego at Rarefied Recording Studios, and the beautiful album cover artwork is by Jordan Lentz. Additional album artwork, layout, design, and development is by Stephen Varns. All songs are written and performed by Nebula Drag, and the words and lyrics are by Cory Quintana.

Here’s the full tracklisting:

  1. Crosses 04:49
  2. Sleazy Tapestry
  3. Failure 08:46
  4. Kneecap
  5. Side By Side
  6. Tell No One
  7. Western Death 04:18

Three songs are currently available to preview and purchase on Bandcamp, including “Crosses,” “Failure,” and “Western Death.” “Crosses” is a song that takes no punishers, with a chugging heaviness and ultra-mean riffs. “Failure” is nearly nine minutes long and, while still being heavy as hell, shows Nebula Drag playing with a bit more finesse. “Western Death” brings more wicked riffs that will remind you of old-school metal while still sounding fresh and original.

Pre-orders for Nebula Drag’s Western Death vinyl are ready now, so jump on this bad boy while you can. While you’re at it, brush up on the band’s previous releases, including 2016’s self-titled debut and 2019’s Blud. Enjoy!
