Omega Sun is a Slovenia-based stoner rock act playing what they call “mystic fuzz rock.” That sounds similar to heavy psychedelic, so we figured this was right up the alley for Third Eye readers. The band released a new album called Roadkill on September 8, 2023, via Croatia-based No Profit Recordings, and it’s here to blow up your speakers and make your head nod to the hypnotic riffs.
About Roadkill and Omega Sun
Omega Sun is a power trio playing their interpretation of stoner rock, consisting of Igor Kukanja on vocals and bass, Aris Demirović on guitars, and Sebastian Vrbnjak on drums. Roadkill was recorded at Ostudio6 in Nova Gorica, Slovenia, in 2022, and the band “would like to thank ourselves and dedicate this album to ourselves.” Well, after the work they put into it, they might as well, right?
Roadkill is Omega Sun’s second full-length album and the first since their debut, Opium for Masses, released in December 2017. Roadkill is available in digital and vinyl versions if you want to throw them a few bucks.
The Songs
The record starts with “The One,” jumping right into blistering hard rock. Igor’s vocals are great, better than most stoner-rock singers. The guitar work is mean and packs a punch, and the main riff is a good one. There’s not much to dislike about this opening track, and it also reminds me of Nineties-era alt-rock bands like Stone Temple Pilots.
“Black Dust” comes next, a longer song clocking in at more than eight minutes. The heaviness continues with this track, and the guitars are even thicker and more down-tuned. “Black Dust” also allows the band to flex its muscles with several long instrumental sections. Overall, it’s another great track.
“Survive” features a unique guitar tone and is another killer jam. The lengthy introduction finally leads to Igor’s vocals at about the two-minute mark, and his singing is excellent and passionate once again. When he yells, “I’ll survive,” he drags it out in a spine-chillingly emotional way, so you know he’s coming from the heart. I’m not sure what he’s trying to survive from, but maybe it’s just life itself. As someone who’s struggled with depression, I can relate to that.
“Another You” is another longer track at over nine minutes, and it’s just as bone-crushingly heavy. There’s an excellent guitar solo, earth-shattering drum work, and a massive wall of noise. “Another You” twists and turns over its nine-minute run-time, with progressive instrumental work in how the song changes gears and tempos.
The album’s tone stays pretty much the same with “Early Morning,” which feels repetitive and was the first downside of the album that I noticed. That’s not to say the song doesn’t rock, but only that Omega Sun treads much of the same ground in this song as the others. Nevertheless, “Early Morning” has the hallmarks of stoner rock that everyone will love: the heaviness, the great riffs, and excellent vocal work.
The album closes with “Doomer,” an appropriate name given the track’s doom-metal tendencies. Igor’s voice is echoed by backup vocals, an excellent effect I wish more stoner rock bands would use. I was pleasantly surprised by “Doomer” as it mixes things up and closes the album strongly.
Final Thoughts
Omega Sun uses many tags to label Roadkill on Bandcamp, including psychedelic, punk, and industrial. I don’t think any of those labels quite fit the album, though – I’d say this is better termed as no-frills stoner and hard rock meant to be played as loud as possible.
Overall, I enjoyed the album and think this Sloevian band is very talented. Roadkill is worth your attention and could be a good one for the September Doom Charts. While you’re at it, go back and enjoy Omega Sun’s debut LP, Opium for the Masses, and spread the word.
