The FVL. is a newly formed experimental electronic project, launched in 2024 by Hom Yu of Taiwanese psychedelic outfit Mong Tong and sound designer Chia-Yu. Their debut album, Land of Siesta 午睡島 (which we covered here), unfolds as a kind of speculative folklore. It’s a hybrid of folk-rooted sci-fi electronica that drifts between tribal ambient passages, 4th world tonal landscapes, and slow, bass-heavy psychedelia.
At its core, the project is an act of sonic reconstruction. Drawing on fragments of the indigenous Favorlang people — whose language was documented by Dutch colonists in the 17th century before fading into obscurity — The FVL. imagines an alternate continuum in which the culture was never erased. In this reassembled world, ritual, memory, and digital space collapse into one another, forming a speculative archive that feels as much unearthed as it is invented.
The Third Eye had the chance to correspond with the FVL., and they were kind enough to answer our questions. Check out the interview below, where the duo discusses how they would describe the project’s sound, their inspirations, and what they’re working on next.
Interview with the FVL.
Third Eye: Can you tell us a bit about your project/band and how it started?
The FVL.: Hom Yu started this side project along with Chia-yu, aiming to reconstruct the lost civilization of the indigenous Favorlang people.
Third Eye: What inspired your latest release?
The FVL.: History, Taiwanese culture, technology
Third Eye: How would you describe your sound?
The FVL.: Downtempo rhythms, ceremonial percussion, and experimental synths, cutting-edge audio-visual technologies that unfold into a mythic, inward-looking landscape.
Third Eye: What does your creative process usually look like?
The FVL.: We spend most of our time first listening to as many genres as possible, then start making something we’ve “never heard of”.
Third Eye: Where do you usually write or record your music?
The FVL.: Our home studio.
Third Eye: Who or what has been influencing you lately?
The FVL.: 2026 is a year of war, wish we had true peace globally.
Third Eye: How do your live shows differ from your recordings?
The FVL.: More bass, sound design & audiovisual live shows.
Third Eye: Is there a particular track or piece of music you’ve made that you’re most proud of?
The FVL.: “The Visitor 訪問者”, this is the final song but also the key to our next album, which we are currently working on!
Third Eye: What’s been the biggest challenge for you as an artist/band?
The FVL.: Make new things. The only way to satisfy ourselves is to challenge.
Third Eye: What are you working on next?
The FVL.: Next untitled album will build more unique textures & cultural references into it, and will also create a new language of Favorlang. Experimenting is always fun.
Third Eye: Where can people find your music and keep up with you?
The FVL.: Bandcamp, Instagram, or Taipei city in person
