The debut LP from Madison, Wisconsin’s Julian Heresy arrives as a dense, slow-moving force. Music that doesn’t just unfold, but engulfs.
Featuring members of Bongzilla, The Hussy, Wristwatch, Whippets, and Poney, the project draws from a deep well of underground pedigree, but resists easy categorization. Built on a foundation of drone, doom, and stoner metal, the album stretches outward into something more deliberate and architectural.
While the shadow of Sabbath lingers, Julian Heresy pushes far beyond homage. The band channels the monolithic weight of Sunn O))) and Earth, the cyclical precision of Steve Reich, the fractured grandeur of King Crimson, and the cinematic unease of John Carpenter. There are also echoes of Glenn Branca’s guitar symphonies and Swans’ punishing minimalism.
Every track feels carved rather than written; slow-burn compositions that accumulate tension, lock into repetition, and expand into vast, crushing space. This is music built for volume, for immersion, for surrender.
All tracks were composed by M. Shull and Bobby Hussy (The Hussy, Wristwatch, Whippets), with vocals and lyrics from Bongzilla frontman Mikey Makela. Guitar duties are handled by Shull and Hussy, with Tyler Spatz (Wristwatch, Whippets, Poney) on bass and Tony Sellers on drums.
