Clocking in at a lean 2:59, Wax Mekanix’s latest single “420” lights up a different path from the dense, trippy vibes of his 2023 album Psychotomimetic and last year’s throbbing “Silver Tongued Devil.”

Where’s he headed next? Wherever the hell he wants.

After a string of heavy-hitting tracks from Mobocracy, Blunt, and Psychotomimetic, Wax wanted to clear his creative palate, and he did it with a sugar rush of pure pop adrenaline.

“I was craving an earworm,” he says, “one that would tickle my amygdala like the Froot Loops-fueled Saturday morning TV themes that shaped me.” Think Josie and the Pussycats, Scooby-Doo, The Banana Splits, HR Pufnstuf, The Jetsons, and Gilligan’s Island — catchy and candy-coated.

Those early hooks laid the groundwork for Wax’s lifelong musical appetite: The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Queen, Cheap Trick, Sabbath, Zep, Motorhead, Priest, and Aerosmith, to name a few. Fast forward to 2025, and he has distilled those influences into “420,” a juicy glob of power punk-pop fondant that could easily sit alongside Elvis Costello, The Clash, The Ramones, The Police, The Cars, and The Sex Pistols.

The result is a gloriously fun, snotty, sweet anthem that’s as addictive as it is punchy. Is “420” the new stoner national anthem? Maybe. Or maybe it’s just a blast of pure sonic joy, designed to hit you right in the limbic system. Either way, Wax is having a hell of a time, and so will you.
