Motherhood, the high-energy trio from New Brunswick, pushes their sound even further with Thunder Perfect Mind, a concept album that balances art-rock ambition with raw power.
The album follows a surreal narrative: an unsuspecting pedestrian is abducted by a dark, expanding Cloud with no apparent way out. While the premise leans into sci-fi storytelling, the music remains direct and engaging.
“Despite being a concept album that’s basically a sci-fi novel, it’s the most approachable album we’ve ever made,” says multi-instrumentalist Penny. The band distills complex ideas into sharp, unpredictable songwriting without losing their instinct for immediacy.
Tracks like “Bok Globule” burst with punk urgency while “Wandering” leans into pop structures without feeling conventional. Across its eleven tracks, Thunder Perfect Mind resists easy categorization, shifting between jagged rhythms, off-kilter melodies, and moments of surprising warmth. The band’s willingness to embrace chaos and clarity gives the record its distinctive shape.
Often called “Evil Beach Boys,” Motherhood thrives on contrast—dissonance, harmony, precision, and spontaneity. Their rural Canadian roots surface unexpectedly, from their distinct phrasing to the loose, communal energy that fuels their sound.
