Domantas Pūras is an electroacoustic composer from Vilnius, Lithuania, who released a fascinating instrumental record in December. His debut double LP, Like an Underground River, merges the ethereal with the profound, crafting a deeply immersive auditory experience.

Drawing inspiration from the legacy of M. K. Čiurlionis, one of Lithuania’s most celebrated cultural figures, Pūras reimagines the harmonic language of this fin de siècle pioneer.

Čiurlionis, a polymath whose contributions spanned music, painting, and literature, is revered not only as a forerunner of abstract art in Europe but also as a beacon of Lithuanian national identity.

His work embodies the spirit of symbolism and Art Nouveau, bridging the mystical with the modern. Through Like an Underground River, Pūras channels this timeless influence into a rich tapestry of organ and electronic textures, blending drone, ambient, and experimental sound elements.

Recorded across three distinct acoustic environments—Stockholm’s Royal Academy of Music, St. Casimir’s Church in Vilnius, and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre—the album invites listeners to traverse sonic landscapes that echo with history and innovation.

Its compositions unfold slowly, like the flow of an unseen river beneath the earth, alternating between meditative tranquility and dissonant, resonant intensity.

The record functions as a dialogue across centuries. Pūras’ layered textures and evolving soundscapes transport listeners to a liminal space where past and present converge.

Here, Čiurlionis’ legacy becomes a living, breathing force, reflected in the organ tones and electronic echoes that fill the listener’s imagination.

Much like Čiurlionis, who composed over 400 pieces of music and created nearly 300 paintings in his brief but prolific life, Domantas Pūras stands at the intersection of art and innovation. By weaving the historical and the modern into his music, he offers a fresh lens through which to explore Lithuanian cultural identity and its resonance in today’s world.

With Like an Underground River, Pūras pays homage to his roots and carves out a path for the future of electroacoustic music, inviting us all to listen—to history, to art, and to the ever-flowing river of sound.
