Hornorkesteret, a Norwegian avant-folk sextet, crafts deeply immersive acoustic landscapes using an eclectic mix of reindeer antler fiddles, moose skulls, field recordings, percussion, and other acoustic instruments.

Known for pushing the boundaries of organic sound, they have carved a tonal realm that feels both familiar and otherworldly. Their unique instruments, constructed from nature’s raw materials, resonate with haunting overtones and earthy textures, often evoking the cries of animals or whispers of human voices.

Since their debut in 1999, Hornorkesteret’s sound has evolved from raw noise explorations to a more melodic and rhythmically driven experience.

Their 2019 studio album, Jehovas Vinter, delves into Nordic traditions and folklore, gaining recognition from editors at Tidal in 2020 and landing them a slot at Norway’s renowned NattJazz festival in 2021.

Their latest release, Dans fra dalstrøka, presents nine original compositions that span playful dance tunes, introspective meditations, and powerful riff-driven journeys.

Pieces like “Utrøst” explore the legend of an enchanted island beyond Lofoten with its swinging, minor-key melancholy. “Krekling” celebrates the simple joy of foraging berries, while “Gangar grå” draws on the eerie mythos of The Wild Hunt.

In “Sommerbeite,” a shepherd boy’s grand, spirited declaration of love to a mountain maiden fills the listener with an almost cinematic sense of nature’s raw romance.

Deeply rooted in folklore and inspired by the wildness of nature, Hornorkesteret crafts music that defies easy categorization.

They honor nature’s spontaneous symphony of sounds while blending intricate folk-inspired melodies with minimalism, free improvisation, and even Krautrock influences. The result is a stirring, untamed acoustic experience. Enjoy!
