Toucan is the rustle of dancing leaves in the rain, the slick ground underfoot, and a flash of vibrant colors that takes over the space—a kaleidoscope of sound and movement.

It’s the first album by JackDupon as a trio—a whirlwind of agitation and strange, otherworldly noises that fill the emptiness left behind. Here, reason is swapped for absurdism, and your head floats elsewhere, lost in a jungle of sound.

JackDupon is no ordinary trio. With bass, drums, guitar, and vocals, they craft music like ritual poetry—fractals of sound woven into a living, breathing mosaic. Their music defies simple categorization. Call it minimalist rock, à la Shellac, psychedelic, avant-garde, or Rock in Opposition if you must—but the band thrives on ignoring all such labels. Instead, they choose to carve their own path where no stylistic boundaries confine them.

The result is an instrumental ritual that pulls listeners into a maze of fragile, almost childlike vocals, all the while guided by a twisted mastery of rhythm.

If you were to reach for comparisons, you might think of Fred Frith, Primus, King Crimson, Zappa, or the raw energy of Nick Cave’s The Birthday Party. Yet even these are mere shadows of the wild, untamed energy JackDupon brings to life.

Their music dances between soundscapes, fractured poetry inspired by Oulipo, and jagged, aggressive mood shifts. It’s as if they make opposing rhythms dance in an endless, hypnotic swirl.

Since 2004, this ultra-prolific band has been spreading its strange and wondrous moods to every corner of the world, connecting with listeners through the unpredictability of its live shows and the deep catalog of albums it has released.

Consisting of six tracks, Toucan sounds like the result of a stem cell research project where a team of acid-freak scientists used the genetic codes of Zappa and Captain Beefheart to create a trio of mildly psychotic French musicians.

It may be the strangest album I’ve heard this year, and that’s saying a lot because The Third Eye likes to cover unconventional music. This is weirdo music for weirdo people, so turn it up loud and dance to it like no one’s watching.
