Montréal’s psychedelic noise rock quintet En Fer recently released its latest EP, La Collision, which proved to be a loud, disorderly (but welcome) attack on my auditory senses. The release is inspired by the long-discredited theory of a collision between Pluto and Triton, Neptune’s elusive satellite.
It’s a theory once passionately championed in the early 1960s by astrophysicist M.M. Woolfson (1927-2019). This also proves that the psych iron lords of En Fer are probably much smarter than moi, and they’ve done their homework.
La Collision captures the echoes of “lost signals” from this cosmic clash, translating them into a swirling maelstrom of rock music that breathes new life into a forgotten chapter of astronomical history.
The allure of obsolete cosmology—when astronomers followed their instincts and romantic impulses—fuels En Fer’s latest creation. The EP delves into the cosmic grooves that defined last year’s full-length album, GROS ROCK, while resurrecting the raw, abrasive energy of earlier works like their pre-pandemic EP, Le Sacre Fils.
The rituals of La Collision embrace improvisational rock’s primal chaos, amplified by a lo-fi recording approach that adds a layer of raw immediacy. With the masterful touch of composer and sound engineer Dominic Jasmin, the EP’s signature chaotic structures and noise-drenched sound reach new heights.
In the same way the technological surge of the space age relegated eccentric theories of the solar system’s formation to the realm of folklore, free rock has been pushed to the outer fringes of the contemporary music scene.
But En Fer thrives in outer space, where it stands side by side with Pluto and Triton, forging its own gravitational pull with gros rock.
