Schwerkraft für Anfänger marks the third studio album from Cologne, Germany’s instrumental rock maestros, Der Neue Planet, and their second release on Tonzonen Records.
Just like its predecessor, Area Fifty-Fun (2022), this album is a product of the band’s continued collaboration with Lukas Bönschen (Smokemaster) for recording and mixing and the legendary Eroc, former Grobschnitt drummer, who handled the mastering.
The band’s visual identity shines through the album’s artwork, crafted by Cologne-based illustrator Manuel Lambertz (“vonbertz”), continuing a partnership that has now spanned three albums.
The first thing that catches your eye is the album’s cover—an artistic extension of the band’s playful, intricate style that suggests Der Neue Planet remains steadfast in its unique approach. The track titles nod to their signature humor, adding an extra layer of personality to the experience.
Musically, Schwerkraft für Anfänger showcases the band’s versatility and progressive rock edge. The compositions are dynamic and innovative, steering clear of the usual technical noodling or the loud-quiet clichés often found in post-rock.
Instead, the album is a melting pot of influences, melding post- and stoner rock with everything from funk and jazz to krautrock, psychedelic vibes, and even hard-hitting metal riffs. Der Neue Planet takes listeners on a genre-blending journey in just five tracks while maintaining its distinct melodic identity.
Fans of Elder, Colour Haze, and Mars Red Sky should like these heavy dream prog rockers. If you dig Schwerkraft für Anfänger, check out Der Neue Planet’s previous work, including the 2018 LP Magrathea Erwacht.
