Earlier this summer, Sonor Music Editions released a meticulously restored reissue of Maestro Sandro Brunolini’s Overground, a hidden gem in the world of library music. Originally released in 1970, this elusive masterpiece is one of the most impressive works of the Italian composer, standing alongside his iconic Underground.
Sandro Brugnolini, a key figure in the Modern Jazz Gang during the 1950s and 1960s, was instrumental in shaping Italian jazz. His work spans genres from psychedelic lounge funk to progressive jazz beat, with albums like Miles Before And After (1960) and the soundtrack for Gli Arcangeli (1962).
Overground was initially composed as a soundtrack for the documentary Persuasion, commissioned by Italy’s Ente Provinciale Per Il Turismo Di Trento. Featuring a stellar lineup of musicians, including Angelo Baroncini on guitars, Giorgio Carnini on piano and organ, and Giovanni Tommaso on bass, the album blends underground psychedelic prog rock with swirling organs and fuzz guitars, sophisticated lounge grooves, and avant-garde orchestrations.
This reissue, transferred and remastered from the original master tapes, has been lacquer cut in stereo and packaged in a thick cardboard sleeve adorned with a restored painting by Umberto Mastroianni. Overground is a unique musical experience, a journey through time, and a must-have for any classic Italian or esoteric music collector.
