Magnolia is a large genus of flowering plant species found in many places worldwide, including the Americas and the West Indies. These large, fragrant flowers are among the first to bloom in spring, in shades of white, pink, purple, green, or yellow.
The psychedelic funk band Magnolian Moods presumably knows all about this. The Vienna, Austria-based group’s tagline is “moods that haven’t been felt before,” but they also like to say, “the show must grow on.”
The Austrian group is back with a new single, “Wandering Alone,” released on April 12th. Magnolian Moods’ music represents evolving journeys with influences ranging from mystic jazz to acid folk and krautrock. The Third Eye previously wrote about their last single, “Earth and Space, ” released on November 24th. Now that the warmer weather is upon us in the Northern Hemisphere where I am, there’s no better time to listen to the mystifying sounds of Magnolian Moods.
Listen to “Wandering Alone” below:
Tänshn Elmo-R’s lead vocals on the track combine the classic jazz singer style with touches of funk, while the big band backing her up provides the perfect groove. Tänshn sings about a precarious existence on the track, wandering alone on the streets day and night but belonging to several hearts simultaneously. It feels a bit like a 21st-century bohemian anthem, with Tänshn repeating in the chorus, “That’s why I keep on, I keep on, singing songs.”
Magnolian Moods doesn’t have a large back catalog – yet – but what they’ve offered so far is all excellent stuff. Add “Wandering Alone” to your newest playlist, and let the funky acid jazz sounds take you away. Enjoy!
