New Music: All Is Dust by Karkara

Karkara is an explosive power trio from France that released a stunning album called All Is Dust on March 22nd. The album has been on heavy rotation at The Third Eye HQ. The band mixes garage, fuzz, psychedelia, and Middle Eastern sounds into an intoxicating blend that glues together East and West sounds.

The band formed in 2017 in Toulouse, France, inspired by the psych-rock scene of the Middle East and the Maghreb of the Sixties and Seventies. Karkara combines its traditional inspirations with a visceral taste for the shattering sounds of garage/fuzz and contemporary krautrock. It’s killer stuff.

The band has been known to use its favorite atypical instrument, the didgeridoo, though I’m unsure if they did so on All Is Dust. “Like desert wizards, they take pleasure in pushing the boundaries of the genre further and taking their audience into a mystical and indomitable world,” the group writes.

All Is Dust is a wild ride, sounding a bit like KGLW in the vocals and driving, motorik beat of many of the songs. It should also be noted that the city in France where Karkara comes from – Toulouse – has an incredible music scene.

Located in southwest France, The Guardian recently wrote the French city is hitting all the right musical and culinary notes. Another similar garage-psych band, SLIFT, has blasted out of the town. It’s a hot spot.

Fans of SLIFT will love All Is Dust by Karkara, a high-energy, rocking album bursting with creativity and color. If you like All Is Dust, check out the group’s previous two LPs, 2019’s Crystal Gazer and 2020’s Nowhere Land. If you’re in Europe, you may also be able to catch Karkara on tour, as they’ve got dates in the U.K., France, and more lined up through August. Enjoy!
