New Single: ‘Mind Screen’ by Emergency Group

The experimental free-jazz rockers Emergency Group have released a new single called “Mind Screen” off an upcoming album of the same name, which will be delivered to the hungry psychedelic masses on July 1st. It’s the summer blockbuster we’ve always deserved, a new album from the Brooklyn quartet that sees them expanding in new directions.

Listen to “Mind Screen” below:

The liner notes by Jesse Jarnow tell us the new record, Mind Screen, is the result of Emergency Group’s first extended studio visit, where they worked under the gentle guidance of Charles Schlarb, their first time working with a producer. Emergency Group has been a fierce improvisational unit since forming in 2020, but the new record will include some material that has been more composed.

Either way that you slice it, new music from Emergency Group is a great thing. “Mind Screen” features the slightly ominous experimental rock we’ve come to expect from them, a track that powers on for about seven minutes. Jonathan Byerley leads us on the hazy journey, backed by the always-solid rhythm section of Andreas Brade (drums) and Dave Mandl (bass). Unlike music that’s psychedelic-in-name-only, “Mind Screen” proves again that Emergency Group captures the wild, free, and freaked-out tones of the best psych.

I could tell you more about the new record, but I plan on writing a longer review closer to the release date at the band’s request. For now, feast your senses on “Mind Screen” and consider pre-ordering the new album, Emergency Group’s first vinyl release. If you’re looking for more from the band, check out the Lagniappe Session they did for Aquarium Drunkard, released in February. Enjoy!
