Bandcamp of The Day: Mydriasis by Comacozer

Sometimes I like to dig through Bandcamp and look for older releases I may have missed. It’s not always about “new music” that hasn’t been released yet or just got released. Sometimes it’s about finding stuff you haven’t heard before that’s a few years old. In a way, that’s just as new as anything else because it’s “new” to you.

I was excited to find some “new” music from Comacozer, an instrumental dark heavy psych space rock band from Sydney, Australia. I’ve been listening to their 2019 LP, Mydriasis, and it’s blowing me away. It consists of just three tracks and a runtime of more than 45 minutes. Australia is always teeming with psychedelic rock talent, and this is another great band from there.

Comacozer formed in 2015, and they craft meditative passages of instrumental music that are intense, dark, and murky acid-filled jams. They added a synth player in 2018, and Mydriasis was their fourth full-length release.

Mydriasis is on the much heavier end of the psychedelic spectrum, combining stoner rock, acid rock, and doom metal influences. There’s sometimes debate over what’s psychedelic and what’s not, and some feel that heavier rock like this isn’t really psych. I don’t much care about the debate, though. The bottom line is Comacozer rocks, so you can call it whatever you want.

The jams on Mydriasis are also super long. All three tracks are at least longer than eleven minutes, with the longest track – “Kykeon Journey” – extending past twenty minutes. This is the type of music to get lost in, or as the band says, the record is “perfect for psychonauts who want to space-travel and ultimately get crushed by the weight of asteroid.” It’s got fuzz, it’s got power, and it’s got enough technical proficiency to rank up there with best of heavy psych music.

Fans of Earthless, Astral Construct, and Russian Circles should love Myrdriasis and likely everything Comacozer has created. The Australian band hasn’t released any new music since a 2020 single, but I’m pretty sure they’re still active judging by their Bandcamp and social media. If you like Mydriasis, check out Comacozer’s other work, including their 2016 debut LP, Astra Planeta.
