The Third Eye

Italian art-rock collective Oslo Tapes released a terrific album last year called Staring At The Sun Before Goin’ Blind. It was so good that I included it on The Third Eye’s Best Psychedelic Albums of 2023. Oslo Tapes is gearing up to release a new music video for “Like a Metamorphosis,” and The Third Eye is very proud to premiere it here on the site.

The video will be officially released on Friday, May 3rd, on Oslo Tapes’ YouTube channel. Staring At The Sun Before Goin’ Blind was released on LP, CD, and digital platforms on December 1, 2023, by the coalition of international labels Echoedelick Records, Sound Effect Records, and Grazil Records.

The video for “Like a Metamorphosis” combines body art, Lynchian hallucinations, and German expressionist cinema that puts the “art” front and center in Oslo Tapes’ excellent brand of art rock.

It stems from a collaboration between Marco Campitelli, the driving force behind the Oslo Tapes project, and avant-psychedelic musician Kaouenn (born Nicola Amici). The arrangement and production are credited to Amaury Cambuzat, a member of Faust, Ulan Bator, and Oslo Tapes.

The visual interpretation of the song was handled by the visual artists Marco Di Battista (director) and Nicola Antonelli (performer). The masks in the video are used to invoke and evoke what lies within each individual, resonating with every unnatural movement of the performers in ritualist dance. 

Some history on Oslo Tapes … Marco Campitelli was born and raised in Lanciano (Italy) on the southern coast of the Adriatic Sea. He founded the Oslo Tapes collective in the early 2010s after returning from a trip to the Norwegian capital that made a deep impression on him.

With his newfound infatuation and intention to capture the mystical atmosphere of Norway, he composed and produced the first Oslo Tapes album, OT, in 2013 within a week. In 2021, the renewed Oslo Tapes collective released ØR, which received critical acclaim and led to them performing on prestigious European stages such as the Roadburn Festival in 2022. (‘ØR’ is Norweigan for “dizzy, confusing.”). 

Oslo Tapes released its latest record, Staring At The Sun Before Goin’ Blind, in 2023. It’s an auditory mirage that blends sound and matter and, in The Third Eye’s humble opinion, one of the best psychedelic records of 2023.
