Mondo Trasho is a five-piece psychedelic/garage rock band from Liverpool that recently released a new single, “Strangers,” inspired by Goblin Italian horror films and Eastern lullabies.

Much like the city where they come from, Mondo Trasho’s music is a melting pot of influences, developing from the early surf rock triptych of EPs Pure Trash, That’s Trash, and More Trash, all released in 2021. The group’s sound has since expanded into psychedelic, garage rock, and Morricone-inspired Spaghetti Western soundscapes. Mondo Trasho’s name is taken from the title of a 1969 John Waters film, which highlights their cinematic musical themes.
Mondo Trasho was founded by flatmates Jay Muat (lead vocals, guitar) and Chris “Moz” Green (Hammond organ) over a mutual love for garage punk bands such as Cramps and Flat Duo Jets. The pair slowly honed their sound and added new members: Luke Hamilton (bass), Dan Mayers (guitar), and Greg Mitchell (drums).
Building on their 2023 releases, “Hard Times (That’s Life)” and “Sands of Time”, they released the new single “Strangers” on February 16th. The single expands the band’s sound as they voyage into Italian Giallo soundtracks and the timeless charm of Scott Walker. They say their creative output remains boldly inventive despite looking backward to gain inspiration.
Mondo Trasho has played recent U.K. shows with Night Beats, Triptides, and Zamrock legends, WITCH, and they’re looking to explore shows at venues further afield. Maybe a broader European tour? We’ll see.
“Strangers” is a cool, haunting psych-garage track notable for its vintage sound and strong vocals. The organ adds an epic feel, and the layers of sound from the five-piece group provide a rich listening experience.
