The Third Eye

Chorduroy is a San Diego-based psych-rock band that recently dropped the first single and music video off their upcoming record, Voice of Reason. The name of the single is “Alien Mask,” it shows how the band’s sound has evolved greatly since they formed in 2019.

These California psych-rockers began with the classic San Diego-influenced surf punk sound, with many poppy hooks and a youthful attitude. They’ve since spent considerable time crafting a newer sound, going to psych-rock legend Eric “King Riff” Bauer (Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Meatbodies) to produce and engineer their debut album. Voice of Reason promises to be a crazy trip through desert and space, an energetic mix of the band’s influences, encompassing psych-garage rock, punk, pop, and even a little stoner metal.

Chorduroy will drop two more singles before Voice of Reason releases in May, and they’re going all-out with a vinyl release. With a couple of lineup changes, the band has grown louder and more ambitious, the new record is ready to roll, and these gents are ready to hit the road and play. Let’s go!

As for the new single “Alien Mask,” Chorduroy captures the frenetic psych-garage sound of modern masters like Frankie and The Witch Fingers, Charles Moothart, Thee Oh Sees, and Meatbodies. The chaotic sounds and aggressive playing bring a punk-rock attitude that should be popular among fans of the previously mentioned artists.

Even the lyrics have the feel of groups like Frankie and The Witch Fingers. “I’m gonna wear my alien mask today/Ignore the impending doom/Struggle to play this elaborate game/Cause’ I don’t wanna lose,” the vocals ring out over the blaring riffs and driving drums. This is not to say Chorduroy are mere copycats, though – they bring their own unique flavor to the track.

Doom and modern malaise are popular topics for psych-garage bands like Chorduroy, but guess what? Doom sells, my friend. And who can blame them for focusing on the doom in our current American wasteland?
