Live Bait was released in April 2023 via Brutal Panda Records and contains three tracks created and recorded live in the studio.
The Songs
1. Alone With My Thoughts (07:07)
While this track has a jazz undertone, I would put this more into the stoner-psych category. Night Fishing applies groove, some fairly heavy guitar riffs, and a keen sense of musicianship to this jam. There is an intensity that increases as the song moves towards the end, which is an element that I find pretty intriguing.
2. No Services (08:19)
The intro is super sexy, laid back, and has a touch of progressive rock to it, initially reminding me of Tool. As Night Fishing heads into the meat of the track, they also move into more psychedelic tinged territory, coming up with something that has a feel similar to the latter-era King Buffalo. They bring out a stoner influence about two-thirds of the way in while still riding the psychedelic wave they began with. As with the first track, it is apparent these musicians feel the most comfortable when they are in the pocket, vibing off of each other to serve the song.
3. Slapback Twister (09:48)
I expected a lot of delay in the guitar parts after reading the title of this last song; what I got was a psych meets stoner rock influence with a lot of energy. The bass and drums supply a solid groove to kick things off, with the guitars playing a light, staccato-feeling riff that soon takes on a bit of stoner. Like the first song, there are bits of intensity that recall the parts of jazz that I find interesting, but they are broken up by all the other great things that Night Fishing offers.
Final Thoughts
Night Fishing has made an album that I found to be highly entertaining. Their mix of influences, skill, and the rise and fall during the song’s runtime is captivating to listen to. I recommend that everyone goes and gives Live Bait their attention, as you’ll all enjoy it as much as I have.
