Angad Berar’s Sundae is a sun-drenched delight, a buoyant blend of Hindustani psych and krautrock that glides with steady momentum.

Released independently on June 6th, with vinyl editions via Echodelick and Stickman Records and cassettes through Gezellig, Sundae marks Berar’s fourth album and second full-band recording.

Co-produced with Kartik Pillai (Karuta Records), whose fingerprints are all over the Indian indie underground (Jamblu, Begum, Peter Cat Recording Co.), Sundae hums with a newfound sense of rhythm and texture.

The record also marks a personal milestone for Berar. After stepping away from drum-based compositions post-Elephants on the Beach, he returns here with a more confident grasp of groove and dynamic layering.

Written across Goa, Delhi, and Berlin over several years and captured in a focused five-day session at Pillai’s Faridabad studio, Sundae radiates an easy, yet forward-driving energy.

The result is music made for motion: long drives, bike rides, or simply zoning out and letting your mind wander. Bright, optimistic tones pulse throughout, like the sonic equivalent of ice cream melting on a sweltering day.

Notably, Sundae also features Berar’s first vocal performance, on the track “Driving With You.” It’s a natural fit amid the album’s fluid, kraut-inspired soundscapes, adding another layer of warmth and personal connection.

Spanning eight tracks and over 50 minutes, Sundae unfolds through a series of instrumental jams (other than “Driving With You”) that flow with the hypnotic fluidity of a lava lamp, shifting, stretching, and shimmering in unexpected ways.

The album’s centerpiece, “Jam 6,” stands as the pinnacle of this exploration. Clocking in at over ten minutes and featuring contributions from Jamblu and Siddharth Kaushik, it’s a lush, immersive journey. The track invites you to drift with it—like watching clouds glide across a vast summer sky in slow motion—serene, expansive, and endlessly absorbing.

Berar describes the co-production process as “co-flying heavy machinery at this altitude,” a fitting metaphor for an album that moves with both precision and a joyful lift. Sundae feels like a creative reset: rooted in familiar textures yet signaling fresh possibilities.

With its release perfectly timed for summer 2025, Sundae is a bright, head-nodding soundtrack for sunny days and open roads and a testament to Berar’s evolving artistry and the collaborative spirit of India’s emerging psych scene.
