The Magnificent Mr. Ty Segall is saddling up for another wild ride with Possession, his 16th studio album, out May 30th via Drag City.
This time, he’s trading labyrinthine fuzz-scapes for something more mythic and cinematic. Co-written with filmmaker and longtime co-conspirator Matt Yoka, Possession tells tales of broken prophets, cursed luck, and the cracked mirrors of American folklore.
The new songs are weird little rock fables with orchestral flourishes, wailing sax, and Ty’s signature guitar gumption. “Fantastic Tomb,” the incredibly catchy lead single, unspools like a sun-damaged retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s iconic short story “The Cask of Amontillado,” but with fuzz pedals and hope.
The title track, “Possession,” is the album’s spellbound centerpiece. It’s a six-minute vision quest that starts with a Bible next to the butter and ends somewhere near witch trials and jammed-out catharsis. It’s the only song with lyrics solely by Yoka, and it feels like a film reel melting in real time.
Fresh off 2024’s genre-hopping Three Bells and the instrumental Love Rudiments, Segall is still dodging routine like it’s cursed. Possession shows Ty swinging for the visionary fences with arrangements that shimmer and spiral, where guitars gallop, strings howl, and the ghosts of Americana dance.
To match the album’s heat, Segall’s hitting the road hard. After a spring U.S. loop, he’ll return for a fall West Coast run from Oct. 8–18, including stops in Solana Beach, San Francisco, and Portland.
Buckle up, folks: Possession is here to haunt and holler.
