Coming straight from the alien wasteland of New Mexico, Tan Cologne has been creating spaced-out shoegaze since members Lauren Green and Marissa Marcias first came together.
The psychedelic duo adds to their collection of otherworldly soundscapes with the release of “Cloud of Mirrors” (April 16th via Labrador), a reverberative new single sure to bring the listener above wherever the sky could stretch.
From the first beats of the drum machine, you are melted into a swirling yet static beam of diffraction spread out across dimensions of time.
The track is easily recognized to be their handicraft, but features hints of exploration from the group. The signature wall of sound is built with a tad more fuzz compared to some of their more popular work (i.e., Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico).
The vocals, as always, are soft and spacious, lulling as a voice in a forest. A hint of ominousness in the form of deep, synthetic phrasing works its way into the scene near the end of the track, but is returned into the background without much fanfare.
“Cloud of Mirrors” is hazy yet reflective, like light beaming off of and being absorbed in the glowing gloom that the title invokes.
While the song certainly doesn’t break any new ground among their discography, “Cloud of Mirrors” is a further showing of Tan Cologne’s ability to take the vibrations ever present in the cosmos and convert them to a listenable form.
The new single is off their upcoming record, Unknown Beyond, which is due for release on June 20th. Pre-order the digital album here.
