With Visions of Utopia, Los Angeles-based psych collective Elf Freedom crafts a hypnotic, free-flowing journey through the outer edges of psychedelic sound.
Led by vocalist and sound healer Nora Keyes and multi-instrumentalist Bee Appleseed, the album is a swirling, improvised séance where folk, kosmische, and avant-garde jazz dissolve into pure energy. It’s the band’s fifth LP beyond their many live recordings and, according to Bee, the favorite record he’s ever worked on.
Keyes’ voice is the guiding light, shifting from ethereal whispers to spectral wails, wrapping around the music like mist over moonlit waters. Appleseed, along with Elf Freedom’s rotating ensemble of collaborators—Mirage, Noel Rhodes (Unusual Tuesdays), ZZ Ryder, Paul Kaufman, and Tonya Lee Jaynes—weave shifting soundscapes that drift between meditative drones and explosive, ecstatic peaks.
The album’s highlights emerge like visions from a euphoric acid trip. Moments of raw vulnerability collapse into chaotic instrumental surges, then reassemble into something strangely serene. The way sound is layered has a tactile, almost ceremonial quality. Every tone and texture carries a nearly physical presence.
Released on March 15th, the band intends Visions of Utopia as a vessel for deep listening. It doesn’t ask for passive consumption; it invites full immersion, a surrender to the unknown.
Whether you call that sound healing, experimental psychedelia, or simply a good trip—one thing is clear: Elf Freedom has created something that feels like a portal to somewhere beyond.
