With a swirling tide of pedal steel and fiddle, Joel Timmons’s latest release, “Guitars, Guns, and Pickup Trucks,” plunges listeners headfirst into a genre as distinctive as its title: Psychedelic Surf Country.

Out February 7th, this eleven-song odyssey marks a bold shift for the veteran musician, stepping out of the shadows of his roles as a longtime Sol Driven Train band member and guitarist for Maya de Vitry.

For the first time in his quarter-century career, Timmons takes the spotlight front and center. Drawing from years of relentless touring, recording, and his Lowcountry South Carolina roots, Timmons weaves many influences into a refreshingly original soundscape.

Country twang merges with the nimble intricacy of bluegrass, grounded by the grit of folk-rock. Poetic lyrics mingle with rollicking honky-tonk humor, while meditative musings cycle into jam-grass psychedelia. Echoes of Jimmy Buffett’s coastal ease intertwine with the spirit of Marty Stuart, resulting in an album that feels like a road trip through the soul of American music.

Timmons recently unveiled the third single from his Maya de Vitry-produced debut, Psychedelic Surf Country, the evocative “Guitars, Guns, and Pickup Trucks.” Co-written with his wife and bluegrass bassist Shelby Means, the track is more than a catchy, radio-ready country hit.

Beneath its polished surface lies a tender portrait of Timmons’s father-in-law, the song’s muse. “He’s a rugged Western man with a gun safe, a collection of vintage trucks, and a deep love for bluegrass,” Timmons explains.

Backed by Jason Carter (of the Del McCoury Band), the band nails a masterfully commercial country sound with touches of cosmic country to boot. Acoustic guitar-driven verses build into radiant three-part harmonies on the sing-along chorus, punctuated by elegant instrumental breaks. But the closing refrain ties everything together, distilling the song’s core message into a simple yet resonant truth.

Timmons’s journey from sideman to solo artist is steeped in the tides of his Sullivan’s Island upbringing. Growing up amid the ocean spray and salty breezes of South Carolina’s barrier islands, Timmons developed a profound connection to music and the sea.

As the lead vocalist and guitarist for Sol Driven Train, a band he co-founded with college friends in 2000, Timmons honed his craft on stages big and small.

His versatility has made him a sought-after collaborator, from his work with Maya de Vitry to creating music with Shelby Means under the duo moniker Sally & George. Yet Psychedelic Surf Country is something entirely new: a vivid, solo statement born of decades of experience, a deep well of influences, and an unshakable sense of place.

Releasing February 7th, Psychedelic Surf Country is an invitation to step into Timmons’s singular musical world, where humor meets heart, tradition collides with innovation, and every song tells a story worth hearing.
