Get ready to step into the world of Live Mind, the first-ever live album from The Third Mind. The album features over an hour of mind-bending performances, pulling together moments from their February and March 2024 shows at venues like the Troubadour in Los Angeles, Ventura Music Hall in Ventura, and The Kessler Theater in Dallas.
Co-produced by guitarist Dave Alvin and alternative rock trailblazer Victor Krummenacher, Live Mind captures the raw magic of a band born for the stage.
What started as a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” daydream four years ago has blossomed into a full-blown musical powerhouse. The Third Mind is the brainchild of Alvin and Krummenacher (known for his work with Camper Van Beethoven, Monks of Doom, and Eyelids). Their lineup reads like a who’s who of modern rock: guitarist David Immerglück (Counting Crows), drummer Michael Jerome (Richard Thompson, Better Than Ezra), and soulful vocalist Jesse Sykes (Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter).

For their live shows, the group brings even more star power. Guitarist Mark Karan (Bob Weir’s Ratdog, Phil Lesh) steps in for Immerglück, while legendary LA musician Willie Aron takes the keys, elevating their improvisational psychedelic sets to unforgettable heights.
The Third Mind burst onto the live scene in a big way at the 2023 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park. Their debut live performance was hailed as a “must-see,” kicking off a whirlwind 10-date West Coast tour. Twangville raved: “If you want to experience a set of musicians at the top of their game improvising down a psychedelic rabbit hole, go catch The Third Mind.”
Their journey began with 2020’s self-titled debut album, a collection of sprawling, trippy reinterpretations of songs by Alice Coltrane, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and the 13th Floor Elevators.
The pandemic paused their plans just as they were gearing up to hit the road. Fast forward to 2023, and the band returned with The Third Mind 2, a bold evolution featuring vocals from Jesse Sykes and reimagined late-’60s gems by Electric Flag, Fred Neil, and Dillard & Clark, plus an original, “Tall Grass.”
Now, The Third Mind is unleashing the full power of their live act with Live Mind, dropping this February. But you don’t have to wait to experience their magic in person. Before the album hits, the band will play four northern California dates, including stops at the Odd Fellows Lounge in Auburn, Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, Sebastiani Theater in Sonoma, and The Chapel in San Francisco.
March 2025 marks the start of their full-fledged album release tour, which will begin with a blowout show at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano and include more dates. Catch them if you can.
