Dexy Valentine, one half of the ethereal indie dark-pop duo Magic Wands, describes their latest release, “Armour,” as “a reflection on the paradox of the human condition, the need for protection and an equally strong desire for freedom.” The song, released via Metropolis Records, dives into the tension between self-preservation and vulnerability, grappling with how these opposing forces merge and collide.
Since forming in 2008, the LA-based (via Nashville) duo has refused to be confined by any genre. Vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Chris and Dexy Valentine have crafted a signature sound that defies easy categorization—a blend of gothic post-punk, haunting dream-pop, and textural soundscapes.
Their music radiates with shadowy synths, hypnotic guitar lines, and ethereal vocals, inviting listeners into an otherworldly realm filled with midnight beats and glimmering guitar reverberations.
With “Armour,” Magic Wands expand their dark-pop roots, presenting a more intricate and evolved sound. “Last year’s album, Switch, marked a shift for us,” Dexy explains. “It moved away from our pop foundations into something more experimental and introspective. This new work continues down that path but with a minimalist, uptempo edge.”
Magic Wands has earned accolades and an intensely loyal fanbase with its evocative and boundary-pushing soundscapes. Described by MK Ultra as “imaginative and emotionally engaging” and by Post-Punk.com as “an audacious and psychedelic probe into the fabric of existence,” the duo invites fans into an ever-mysterious journey through sound. Enjoy!
