The album’s signature sound is led by the divine interplay of Shoshi and Sweet’s dual vocals, a harmonious dance of feminine power that cuts through the cosmic static. Benyomin’s immersive clawhammer, Gabriel’s modular synth sorcery, Dave and Mike’s thunderous percussion, Paul’s shimmering guitar work, and Habiba’s wandering Microkorg lines elevate each track into an astral experience.
Their collective energy creates something unique—imagine the dreamchild of Stereolab, Dirty Three, and The Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, all pulsing with Jewish mysticism and otherworldly resonance.
About the band …
Solilians first came together in 2013 to craft the 7-inch soundtrack for The Binah Comics, a non-violent superhero tale about a woman sickened by the nuclear posturing surrounding her homeland.
This unique project was just the beginning, brought to life by Benyomin Malkin’s words and Ian Densford’s illustrations. The dream team Benyomin assembled included space rock veterans like Neptune Sweet (Electric Djinn), J. Cep (The Stargazer Lilies, Soundpool), and Gabriel Walsh (The Earthly Frames, Timesbold). Their debut single, “Binah’s Dream,” was a haunting and atmospheric offering hinting at the cosmic journeys to come.
As the band evolved, so did its lineup. J. Cep departed to focus on The Stargazer Lilies, making room for the ethereal Shoshi, whose Mediterranean Hebrew vocals intertwined with Sweet’s cosmic tones, creating a lush vocal landscape reminiscent of Stereolab—if slowed to the pace of Stars of the Lid.
By 2016, Solilians had fully embraced their space drone ethos with the release of Shin, a full-length album that brought together a cast of collaborators from Goodbye Better’s multimedia collective.
Among them was DJ/Producer Merc Yes (MRC Riddims, formerly All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors), avant-jazz klezmer trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Hasidic doom metal band Deveykus), and J. Cep’s haunting bowed guitar.
2019 saw the band’s sound deepen with the addition of drummer Mike Margulis, evolving into a rich, sub-aquatic drone rock explored in their split 7-inch with the psychedelic Middle Eastern blues band Skyjelly.
Titled In the Running I, the album’s final track, “The Sisko,” was a cross-cultural collaboration that perfectly embodied I Heart Noise’s genre-blurring brilliance. The Jewish space rock of Solilians and Skyjelly’s Lebanese psychedelic vibes fused in a moment of true musical unity.
As the lineup expanded in 2021, Doliner joined on guitar, building on the ambient clawhammer traditions he and Benyomin explored in their duo, Yar Dreams of Sela. The release of the American Klezmische EP in 2022 showcased Solilians’ growing ambition and experimental range, followed by a 2023 remix of “There Is No Michigan” by Merc Yes.
With the addition of Habiba Alcindor on Microkorg and Dave Gould, an old bandmate from Ideas Are Birds, on drums, Solilians’ sound took on new dimensions of cosmic exploration and earthbound groove.
Solilians have shared their transcendent sonic journeys with various kindred spirits on stage, performing alongside artists like Jim White & Marisa Anderson, Wet Tuna, MV & EE, The Stargazer Lilies, and Brian Chase. Their tours with Connecticut ambient rock legends Landing further solidified their reputation as a band that pushes boundaries, blending genres and defying expectations.
Klezmische Deluxe is a celestial manifesto, a declaration of cultural pride, and a call for action, wrapped in the enveloping embrace of space rock, drone, and klezmer mysticism. Prepare to be transported.
