Memorial Waterslides marks the debut of MEMORIALS, a duo formed by Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, formerly of Electrelane and Wire. The album is an otherworldly journey into surrealist pop, blending dreamy melodies with avant-garde sensibilities.

MEMORIALS craft panoramic pop that stretches the imagination, drawing from influences like Broadcast, Portishead, Arthur Russell, The Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise. Their sound is an eclectic mix of the known and the unknown, treading new ground while paying homage to the past.

Memorial Waterslides is rich with imagery, evoking a lost future, a veiled present, and a daydreamed past. Each track contributes to a swirling, widescreen atmosphere, pulling the listener into a cinematic experience.

The album was self-produced by the duo. Reel-to-reel tape experiments shaped the sound they first explored on stage, layering recordings to build a multi-dimensional live performance.

After earning acclaim for their 2023 soundtracks Women Against The Bomb and Tramps! and touring Europe with Stereolab (earning the nickname “Stereolab’s evil twin”), Verity and Matthew found themselves at MEMORIALS in an unconventional way.

Escaping the constraints of their soundtracking careers, they created a cosmic journey through psychedelic rock, far-out folk, and wild analog electronics—all born from the garden shed and aimed straight at the stars.

Memorial Waterslides is due for release on October 4th. In the meantime, check out the singles available from the upcoming record, including “Acceptable Experience,” “Lamplighter,” and “Cut It Like a Diamond.”
