Delving is one of the many great music projects that started during the pandemic. It began as a studio project of Nicholas DiSalvo, best known as the frontman of the excellent heavy rock band Elder. DiSalvo’s studio project has since become a live band that plans to tour later this year.
Delving’s debut record, Hirschbrunnen, was recorded during the pandemic lockdown when everything ground to a halt. Like many musicians, DiSalvo found time (probably lots of time) to collect song fragments and ideas from over the years and coalesce them into a new LP.
Berlin-based Delving is releasing a new record, All Paths Diverge, on August 23rd. Unlike the debut, this second LP was composed between time on tour and in the studio with Elder. The seven lengthy tracks are gathered from DiSalvo’s ever-expanding songbook of ideas, and they’re a snapshot of his current musical interests, love of the sound of exploration, and they’re hard to pin to any genre.
Generally, Delving makes music that is psychedelic with krautrock tendencies, spiced up with tinges of prog-rock and electronic elements. In this way, it’s very similar to the music Elder has been making recently.
“Zodiak” was the first single released from the new LP on June 25th. This lengthy instrumental song shimmers with excellent guitar and synth for a fantastic mix of proggy psychedelia.
DiSalvo describes himself as an “obsessive songwriter” who works on music daily and amasses a huge collection of song fragments. So, if that’s any indication, we can expect more great work from Delving far into the future, along with the great stuff he does with Elder.
