Psychedelic Source Records is a Hungarian psych-rock collective that’s shrouded in mystery for me. The Third Eye has covered several of its releases within the past year or so, but there’s still a lot I don’t know about them.
My friend Todd at Turn Me On, Dead Man interviewed Bence Ambrus of Psych Source Records in 2020. Bence’s answers give us some context for the collective, but even then, there’s a ton left to the imagination.
What we know: Located primarily in Páty, Hungary, the Psychedelic Source Records collective has prolifically released excellent music on Bandcamp since around the summer of 2017. It’s a collective of bands that share members and jam together with band names like Lemurian Folk Songs, Pilot Voyager, and Liquidacid. Most of the collective’s music is available for name-your-price, and its entire discography on Bandcamp is available for one Euro. That’s 71 releases – or sessions – available for one Euro. Wow!
Like Acid Mothers Temple in Japan, Psychedelic Source Records has virtually no profit motive, which makes the music feel even more pure. Bence mentioned in the interview with Turn Me On, Dead Man that, for the most part, the collective simply jams out in a small house in a forest in Hungary near Budapest. Joints are rolled, beers are passed around, and music is played. I’m guessing it’s all improvisational. Each record the collective releases is referred to as a “session,” not a record.
The collective’s newest session is Los Tayos, released on May 9th. “Welcome to the cave of Tayos,” they say on Bandcamp.” We are glad to take you on an endless sonic trip of cosmic highways, dusty deserts, and peaceful paths of ancient civilizations.” As always, the session is filled with excellent psychedelic jams that branch out into multiple jazz, folk, and ehtno formations.
Bence Ambrus handles guitar and lyrics on Los Tayos, András Halmos is on drums and percussion, Attila Nemesházi on bass, and Krisztina Benus on vocals and keys. Los Tayos consists of six excellent psychedelic tracks. They all range from about five to ten minutes long and contain what we’ve come to expect from Psychedelic Source Records: mind-expanding psych music that is perfect to space out and chill to.
After writing about this collective here and there for a couple of years, I think it’s about time I reached out to them for an interview. In the meantime, check out their latest session, Los Tayos, and consider supporting them on Bandcamp. Los Tayos II is also available, which I’m assuming is just another session from the same iteration of musicians.
One last note: Psych Source Records said in a recent Bandcamp message that they lost access to their Facebook page, which was the primary way they got the word out about their releases. They aren’t sure what happened to it – it might’ve been hacked. Due to this, make sure to spread the word about the Psych Source Records if you can on social media. Enjoy!
