New Music: ‘Cloud Now’ by Davi Music

Davi Music is the work of Chicago-based ambient producer David Feddock. He is back with a new record called On By, due on April 8th via Aural Canyon Records. A single released from the forthcoming album—“Cloud Now”—gives us a taste of what the new album is all about, one that was inspired by a random lunchroom conversation with a co-worker about Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew.

The co-worker was telling Feddock that Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings album was inspired by Bitches Brews, particularly producer Teo Macero’s post-session editing work. Feddock was intrigued because he thought he knew Bitches Brew, but he had no idea there were so many tape cuts and actual tape loops. This, in turn, inspired Feddock to return to his vault of tape loops and put together an album based on edits and the sequencing of musical fragments, odds and ends. The result is On By.

You can read the rest of Feddock’s explanation of how he created On By on Bandcamp, but he concludes by saying, “On By has a different kind of flow than any of my previous releases, and I think feels more like a DJ set than an album.”

Listen to “Cloud Now” below:

The dreamy quality of “Cloud Now” is heightened by the repetition of the tape loops, which makes the song seem to stretch into infinity. The short track glides along gentle currents of sound with warmth, making me eager to hear the rest of On By and what it has in store for us.

If you like “Cloud Now,” check out the rest of Davi Music’s work, including his 2023 LP Good Morning Deja Vu. I also highly recommend staying tuned to Aural Canyon Records’ Bandcamp page for fascinating new ambient music. Enjoy!
