New Music: ‘Shivranjani’ by SOMA

Centripetal Force is having a busy start to the year, and they announced another rad release today with SOMA’s “Shivranjani.” It’s the first track from the forthcoming album Burning is Learning, a collection of sacred hymns, spellbinding dirges, and a bit of mystical meandering.

According to the band, “Shivranjani” contains notes reflecting that Bliss is an existence without concept or form. “It’s performed in honor of the unblemished consciousness of Infinite Goodness, the most Terrible and the most Benevolent,” SOMA says. “It’s a song offered to whom is born every day yet has never been created nor destroyed.”

Have a listen to the song below:

Burning is Learning will be presented in a 200-copy vinyl pressing, and the album will also be available digitally. The release date is March 19th. A limited number of vinyl pre-orders will include artist prints of the front and back covers painted by Robert Ryan (front cover) and Kevin Craig (back cover).

SOMA (Sacred Order of Mysitc Apogees) is a group of multi-instrumentalists from New Jersey with deep roots in the area’s DIY hardcore punk and heavy metal scenes. They consider their music eclectic and sacred, with much of their approach grounded in traditions most associated with Pakistan and India. Burning is Learning is their second album. Pre-orders for the vinyl and digital went live at midnight EST today.

I didn’t get a chance to listen to the whole album, but the new single “Shivranjani” offers an enticing glimpse of the music. The nearly four-minute track contains exotic sounds that feel like an ancient devotional. Tap into the sacred vibrations and let it take you on a journey, man.

SOMA’s live shows are as intense as their recordings, as they often perform in temples, churches, and even cremation grounds. Plans for the band to tour are in the works. Get your pre-orders in now for this marvelously eclectic world-psych album, which is great for fans of OM, Alice Coltrane, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Debashish Bhattacharya, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Enjoy!
