Zinnia’s Garden is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based band that brings us moody vibes with all four members surging in and out of harmony across a rich multi-dimensional music terrain. The group released a new single on New Year’s Eve 2023 called “Purple Portal Dream” and is preparing to drop their second full-length album, Paragon, in the spring of 2024.
The band released their debut album, Death By Design, in 2022, and since then, they’ve become a four-piece with a whole new sound and set of songs. “Purple Portal Dream” is a beautiful, relatively short song that tells a story of believing in yourself and having the strength to chase your dreams. A worthy message!
The new single features gorgeous vocals and harmonies and has a deliciously cosmic feel, like a love song addressed to those listening. Some of the best music can do that, and it reminds me of when I used to listen to Hendrix in my teenage years, and I felt like he was singing directly to me.
Zinnia’s Garden comprises Mary Grace on vocals and drums, Evan Smith on vocals and guitar, Maura Moon on vocals and bass, and Kiah Rhianah on vocals and keys. As you can see, all four members contribute vocals, adding to the lush and rich textures of “Purple Portal Dream.” The release of “Purple Portal Dream” also came with an excellent live music video, which you can watch below:
Although currently based in Pittsburgh, Zinnia’s Garden formed in New Mexico as a project of Evan Smith and Mary Grace. The duo returned to Pittsburgh and connected with Maura and Kiah to create a full-band live setting. There’s a ton of other great information about the band in an interview they did with WYEP, Pittsburgh’s independent music source radio station.
Zinnia’s Garden is another great band in the Pittsburgh scene right now, which also includes the terrific The Garment District and Chameleon Treat. There’s something special happening in the Steel City these days.
Stay tuned for Zinnia’s Garden sophomore album, Paragon, set for release this spring. In the meantime, check out their debut record, Death By Design, which is heavier and darker than I expected. Then again, the band said they draw influences from All Them Witches, so maybe not so surprising!
