New Music: Further by Mos Eisley Spaceport

Somewhere in Germany, there’s a wormhole in the door of a music practice room that takes three dudes straight to 1972 on a small desert planet in the outer rims of a galaxy far away. It’s a groovy desert planet where these three guys are part of a psychedelic space rock group known as Mos Eisley Spaceport, and they jam day and night as the purplish sun comes down and three alien moons rise in the sky to light up the night.

But seriously … A German psych rock group called Mos Eisley Spaceport has recently dropped their debut record, Further, on November 23rd, as they bring us a new lineup, a new sound, and a new adventurous take on their unique space rock style. The band features Sebastian Reimann on vocals, bass, guitar, and synthesizer; Björn Groos on organ, piano, and synthesizer; and Guido Hanslik on drums, percussion, and vocals.

Further features nine tracks of bluesy psych rock with plenty of Krautrock vibes, which makes perfect sense given these gents are in Germany. The band previously released 2020’s EP, The Best of Their Early Year MK. 1, and 2021’s follow-up single, “Interstellar Mantis.”

Further kicks off epically with the ten-minute-long “Ashes to Ashes,” and features plenty of space-rock highlights. “Drop Out” is an excellent hard-rocking track, and the sound of the organ adds a great vintage vibe. “I’m a Robot Dancer” is a standout song with awesome, playful lyrics. “I’m a robot dancer/A manic mechanical device,” they sing, along with the excellent line, “I’m a post-lobotomy Freddy Mercury.” Nice.

“Cocaine Blues” is another excellent track. That organ sounds so cool! The riffs are progressive and mean, and the vocals are fantastic. And for a song about coke, it has that frenetic, madman energy that works well for the song title.

Overall, Further is a fun record with a playful vibe but serious musical chops. It’s evident Mos Eisley Spaceport doesn’t take themselves too seriously and likes to joke around, but, man, the music is no joke. Enjoy.
